A Stream of Consciousness Playlist

While listening to Metallica’s cover of “Tuesday’s Gone” while studying for this Electromagnetism final, my mind began to wander (as is totally normal when studying such a topic). “Tuesday’s Gone” is a song originally written by Lynyrd Skynyrd, as you may know if you’re a fan, or if you ever saw Forest Gump.
Metallica – Tuesday’s Gone

I thought it might be a good idea to try to find a song that Skynyrd covered, and then find a cover song recorded the band who wrote the song that Skynyrd covered, leading us into a vicious cycle of music and fun. So I went straight for “None of Us Are Free,” a song that Solomon Burke song that Skynyrd has covered in recent years. But then I figured, hell- I like the Solomon Burke version better anyway. And also, I don’t know nearly enough music to find a song that Burke covered. So I decided just to go with the train of thought mode. While listening to each song, I’m going to hopefully think of another song, and just go from there, all the while keeping you posted on how my physics addled brain made the connection from one song to the other.
Solomon Burke – None of Us Are Free

Ok, so this is where it gets fun. This song was sent to me by T-Sos via the email, back when we were still trading music. (We stopped because I ran out of space on my iPod.) During those good non filled iPod times, she also sent me this next song by Taxi Chain. I have no idea what it’s actually called, and neither did she, but I have it listed as “Track 4.” Maybe they were going for a Blur-Song 2 kind of deal, or maybe someone just forgot to label the song. This is fun. Let’s see where we go next.
Taxi Chain – Track 4

So while listening to this song, I was struck by the bagpipes. I wanted to get into some more Irish influenced music (which is interesting, considering that the track immediately preceeding "Tuesday's Gone" on Garage Inc. is a cover of an old Irish drinking song- posted here) and kind of wanted to post some Dropkick Murphy’s, but then I realized I already posted them (here). But the DMs have a song called “Shipping Up To Boson,” at which point I knew it was finally time to post some…
Boston – Rock and Roll Band

Having the words rock and roll in the song name gave me so much leeway with this next one. Too much leeway. It would've been way too easy just to post a song like "For Those About to Rock" or "Rock n' Roll" or "Rockin' in the Free World." So instead I took the challenging route deciding to change it up a bit and bring us into the world of electronica.
The Chemical Brothers – Rock Blockin’ Beats

So that worked because of the word ‘rock’ in the song name, but for this next one, I’m going to stick genre specific and go with some Prodigy. I know it's not as fun a jump as last time, but it's the song that popped into my head while listening to the last one, so I feel a moral obligation to post it for you. I mean, who am I to question the gods of the Stream of Consciousness Playlist?
Prodigy – Breathe

As a young lad, I actually purchased some Prodigy; not the full album, but a single. So I thought back to other singles that I bought, back when I never had more than the $5 they sold singles for, and thus couldn’t actually buy any full albums and realized that I can’t remember any of them. But what I can post is one of my all time favorite Pearl Jam Christmas singles, a cover of this classic The Who song.
Pearl Jam – Love Reign Over Me

So we’ve come full circle; from one of my favorite bands in middle school (Metallica) covering a classic rock band (though some would argue Skynyrd is not) to my current favorite band (Pearl Jam) covering another great classic rock group (and if you want to argue that The Who is not classic rock, I will fight you).

Yay- my first shout out! (and yes I know I'm a little behind on my blog-readings, but with good reason (also, I never realized that that's why we stopped emailing songs))
